A tincture is a very potent, concentrated, liquid herbal extract created by soaking herbs in 100 proof alcohol and then setting it to macerate for 6 weeks or more. If stored properly (in a cool, dark place) the tincture will retain the nutrients and healing properties of the herbs indefinitely. Using a tincture is a great way to ingest an herbal extract. The advantage of ingesting herbs in tincture form is that they are more quickly absorbed into your bloodstream, yield speedy results and are easy to take. Alcohol preserves the herbs and is able to extract many more phytonutrients than water alone can. Alcohol also helps permeate membranes in your mouth and body to allow those phytonutrients direct access into your blood stream, bypassing your digestive system. To take a tincture, it is best to take the drops directly under the tongue. If necessary, you may dilute the tincture in an ounce or two of water or herbal tea, flavored with lemon or honey. Each tincture listed here is also available as an herbal tea. All herbal ingredients are Certified Organic and Fair Trade. I make each batch of tinctures according to the lunar cycle for maximum potency. It is well known amongst farmers and folk herbalists that the best time to create herbal remedies is on a new moon, and the best time to decant them is on a full moon.
